From the time he was a child, Sam was fascinated with the army and his ambition was to join it one day.In 1934 20 year old Manekshaw passed out from the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun.

He spent the early part of his career in the rugged North-west Frontier province fighting the Pathans. During the world War II he was assigned to Rangoon to defend Burma against a Japaneses attack. He was wounded with 6 bullets in the stomach. He was awarded with the Military cross for his Gallantary. Manekshaw proved to be a first-class Field Commander as well as a good Strategist during the war with Pakistan in 1971. He led his army to a devastating victory over Pakistan. It was one of the most minutely detailed counter offensives in the recent Military history.Manekshaw was awarded with the field Marshal's Baton.

Since his retirement he is settled in Coonoor in the Nilgiris, and spends his time tending cows, bees, poultry, Prize Dahlias & tea bushes, and also attending board meetings. For this disciplined man life is as purposeful now as it has always been.
